I've heard about card counting a lot. I've seen documentaries and read articles in the paper about it, but I don't actually fully understand what it is.

I know that it helps players win more often at blackjack but I don't know what it actually involves doing.

Card counting is actually a little more complicated than it would seem. If you search around on the net you will find plenty of articles on the subject, but essentially you mark cards down depending on their relative value. By memorising (generally) what cards have come out, you can have a better idea of what is due to come.

It is adjudicated to be slightly underhand by casinos because you are giving yourself an advantage, though it isn't strictly cheating.

A very grey area, I will see what I can find and post something up in this thread later on.

The big news 10 years or so ago was the small computers people where hiding on their person. These would have switches in their shoes that they clicked with their big toe to count the cards. They would receive little pulses from the computer telling them when to bet. These do work quite well as the odds end up in your favour but you’re going to be lucky to have both knee caps left if your caught

I saw a great programme about that on TV a while back very interesting and the reaction for the casinos was as expected.
I think the guys involved where computer geeks not really gamblers.

Card counting is a term used in blackjack by players who use this technique to determine how many 10s are in the deck that has not been played yet. There are many hands a card counter must memorize - what to do on a hand vs the dealers up card. The more a card counter memorizes, the better his odds of winning.
