Many new people to BlackJack don't realise that it is not only their cards that they should be concerned with, but they should take careful notice of the dealers card as well. Indeed you want to aim as close to 21 as possible however you should think whether or not the banker is going to bust or not. If he has a 6 it is very likely that he is going to bust because unless he gets an Ace he will have to draw 2 cards, increasing his chance of busting. Therefore even if you only have 12 or 13 you should just stick with what you have an hope that the dealer will bust.

Remember to always consider the dealers card, not just your own.

This is something that a lot of new players find difficult to understand, it's because in a lot of other card games you are simply concerned with your own hand. Therefore it can be very difficult to see how someone elses hand can affect you.
