Nevada Gambling - Las Vegas, Casinos

The Las Vegas Strip in Nevada is perhaps the single most popular gambling spot in America. It is known for its spectacular casinos - some casinos that mimic entire metroplis areas. Check out New York, New York casino, or the Luxor Casino. These casinos are remaking history with new archelogical wonders.

But the Las Vegas Strip isn't today what it was yesterday, the Vegas Strip really breaks out of the old section of town creating entirely new casino and gaming areas.

Gambling was legalized in Nevada back in 1931 and the first luxury hotel opened in Las Vegas in 1941. By 1956 there were 12 luxury hotels and casinos along the Las Vegas Strip. In 1961 Vegas had 9,000,000 visitors and made a profit of $107 million.

Now there are over 300 casinos and hotels throughout Nevada and the buildings just keep getting grander and more luxurious. There are new thrill rides, luxury pools, golf courses and designer boutiques to compliment the stunning architecture that has arisen of late.

Las Vegas, Nevada is the home of the world's largest casino – the Venetian. It cost $2.5billion to build and covers a staggering 12 million square feet. Not only does the building incorporate the casino but there is also a convention centre, holiday resort and entertainment complex.

The Las Vegas Strip also hosts the $550 million Stratosphere Casino Hotel & Tower. This is the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States at an amazing 1,149 feet.

The majority of the casinos contain similar features with slot machines, restaurants and bars. Some of the larger complexes also have gaming tables for Blackjack, Poker, Craps and Roulette, a Race Book, a Sports Book and Gift Shops.

Las Vegas, Nevada casinos have a wide and varied nightlife. There are nightclubs, shows with top performers each night, bars and cabaret bars. Or you could visit one of the Jazz and Blues venues, the cinemas or the bowling allies.

There are also some major visitor attractions in Nevada including the Hoover Dam and Power Plant, which has held tours since 1937 and gets approximately 1million visitors each year.

Then there is the Grand Canyon National Park, which boasts 5 million visitors per years and is an amazing spectacle and an experience not to be missed.

Nevada is now set to be the first state to legalize mobile gambling. Governor Kenny Guinn has set the bill and several influential companies within the industry have backed the law.

These mobile devices are about the size of a checkbook and people will be able to use them within a public area of any casino that has at least 100 slot machines. Restrictions will be put in place so that they can’t be used in the hotel rooms or private areas so their use can be regulated and it will take up to a year before everything is properly in place.

This comes after a report in March this year in the Las Vegas Review-Journal that stated that even though Internet Gambling was illegal at least one casino in Vegas is offering online betting to customers within the Nevada borders. So it has been widely predicated that Nevada is set to change the face of gambling forever.

Yet the Nevada's casino gambling laws have always been strictly enforced to ensure the casinos are run safely and fairly. They maintain regulations of all the people and practices within the gambling industry and everyone must be fully licensed to avoid criminal charges being brought. Anyone found to be flouting the laws could be jailed for 1-6 years and fined up to $10,000

To enforce these laws, in 1989 the University of Nevada established the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming. The Institute is the first of it’s kind and is used to address the many controversial issues surrounding the Gambling Industry.

One issue, which constantly arises, was brought to the fore in 1999 when the U.S. Gambling Commission published a report entitled “ABC’s of the Casino Industry”.

A= Addiction – stating that if you live within 50 miles of a casino it doubles your chances of becoming addicted to gambling. B= Bankruptcies – there is an 18-35% increase in gambling states. C= Crime – a 9% increase was found.

A report by the University of California in 1997 also showed that suicide rates in areas where casinos where situated were 2-4 times greater. Nevada has had the highest rate of suicides for over 10 years – in 1999 alone 429 people took their own lives.

With this in mind the Nevada Federal Credit Union has now launched a new programme to promote the awareness of “problem gambling”.

In 2003 a report showed that 31% people surveyed had experienced gambling problems within their family and 55% said that gambling problems were a major concern.

The new programme aims to educate people and make them aware of the resources available to them so that they can get help with any addiction they may be suffering from.

So, although gambling can be a wonderful and fun pastime, especially in the state of Nevada, caution must be used so you don’t become another statistic. All in all the state of Nevada is probably the number one destination and brings up the imagination. Las Vegas being the most depicted gambling center in the world. Great shows, brilliant venues and fabulous amenities mean you are certain to enjoy your stay in Nevada.
